The Perfect Red Lip for Your Holiday Party

First up I will say this is not me particularly endorsing a specific red for you to rush out and buy. (Although I will) But mostly I want to let you know some of my secrets to picking my best lipsticks because

I think each of us is perfectly entitled to a signature red lip.

The Case for a Red Lip

Now I strongly believe a bold red lip is a neutral, but I also acknowledge in this I did claim it was a bold red lip and not everyone is comfortable rocking one. So the holidays are the perfect time to try it out for the first time because it’s practically expected to show up in a sequin and red lip. Once you wear it out and receive your endless compliments you are going to be hooked I just know it!

I find a lip can make an outfit classy or edgy or all sorts of things. For us with our minimal wardrobes or on tight budgets a new lipstick can give you all the excitement of a new outfit with a fraction of the investment.

CHOOSING YOUR RED LIP

INVEST A BIT OF TIME IN YOURSELF + YOUR BABE LOOK

I take a long time choosing my lipstick. An impulse buy for me would be under an hour, which of course you don’t have to do! But to get the exact right shade you want to wear for the next 5 years with no regrets, take an extra bit of time.

And go in person! Don’t just choose the ones I rave about here. I recently had someone try to sell me makeup that she wears every day - she had beautiful olive skin, brown eyes and black hair. So despite being gorgeous I wasn’t really sure why her shade of blush was supposed to look good on my pale freckly skin, blue eyes and blonde hair. There is a perfect shade out there for you. We are each our own unique beautiful shade of beauty and there’s unlimited options out there for you to choose from to highlight the shit out that!

You want a red lip that is going to look good with your skin tone and colouring and matches your sense of style.

KNOW THAT THERE ARE BLUE AND ORANGE BASED REDS

There are really two groups of reds, they either have a blue or an orange undertone. Blue is a more classic red, orange will pop more and be nice and bright.

My favourite REd lipsticks

The clear front runner for you to go buy right now is Ruby Woo by Mac Cosmetics.

I love a blue-base matte finish red. I keep trying to buy different ones and end up with these over and over. I tried Heat Wave, an orange based red by Nars one summer and it was perfect but it’s not my go-to at the moment. Up front I’ll tell you these are pretty expensive, with Tom Ford really coming in at the way-to-expensive mark, but what the heck. #YOLO.

Also, here’s some solid logic: when I decided to wear the same red dress to two weddings this fall I figured I was entitled to treat myself to a red lip to match my dress. A $45 spend was so much more affordable than a new dress that I felt very good about my decision.

From left to right: Ruby Woo by Mac Cosmetics $23 | Ruby Rush by Tom Ford $70 (ouch) | Dragon Lady by Nars $27 | 400 by Georgio Armani $46

Another red love is Golshan by Nars $27 a satin lip pencil. Much darker and moodier than these and perfect for the winter.

Everyone looks good in ruby woo

I used to read Vogue religiously and somewhere on one page a model said she wore Ruby Woo by Mac. Being very inspired by finally being able to afford something on the glossy pages I rushed out to purchase my first red lip. I did not realize it is basically the best lipstick of all time.

The case for ruby woo

I am endorsing one lipstick for online-only shoppers. And that is Ruby Woo. It looks good on everyone. This is not my opinion it’s fact. As explained in this Cosmo article:

Every Dancer in Justin Bieber's "Sorry" Music Video Wore the Same Lipstick”

2) It’s matte so it’s long wearing 3) It’s relatively affordable 4) It’s classic AF. Seriously this is the most classic colour + finish possible.
